KOSTRZYN

(former: Küstrin)

Location

Kostrzyn (Küstrin) is located by the Warta River and odra River, near the border between Poland and Germany. Kostrzyn (Küstrin) is about 45 km far west from Gorzów Wielkopolski (Landsberg/Warthe) , and 90 km east from Berlin (Germany). In Kostrzyn (Küstrin) there is a bridge - border passage to Germany. Nearest town on the German river side is Seelow.
Town has about 17000 inhabitants.
River - Warta is surrounding Kostrzyn (Küstrin) from south, and few kilometers near Kostrzyn (Küstrin) Warta is connecting to Odra River. On the north you can find woods, and on the south large meadows and marshes that are the National Park.

History

In middle of XVI century Kostrzyn (Küstrin) was engrid by big fortification. There was located town and the castle.
Kostrzyn (Küstrin) was the capital of Neumark. It was the fortress, but in 1806 was captured by French army.
In XIX century around the town was buildt four forts and few other military objects.
The town and the Castle was completely destroyed during 1945 A.D. by Russian artillery. After World War II rest of the town including the castle was distroyed.

Old Town ruins in Kostrzyn (Küstrin)

The remains of old town Kostrzyn (Küstrin) that was destroyed in 1945. The remains are nowadays partly renewed, and they are an excellent place for a walk.
how to find → When you drive in to Kostrzyn (Küstrin) from Słubice (Frankfurt (Oder)-Dammvorstadt), it is located about 400 metres from Shell gas station on the left side of road. it is located by the Odra River.

Russian military cemetery in Kostrzyn (Küstrin)

Cemetery in memory of Russian soldiers who died in World War II fights in Kostrzyn (Küstrin).
how to find → When you drive from Kostrzyn (Küstrin) to Słubice (Frankfurt (Oder)-Dammvorstadt), near McDonalds there is Hotel Bastion. You can leave car there and walk to old town ruins. It is by Odra on the end of "Old Town".

Odra River

The second longest river in Poland (length: 854.3 km). It carries about 500 m3 of water per second. It is the border between Poland and Germany. You can find beautiful landscapes all along the river.

Historical railway engine Pt47-121 (33D48) in Kostrzyn (Küstrin)

At the entrance to the railway repair works stands as a seldom exhibit, a historical locomotive of the Polish type Pt47 with tender 33D48. The vehicle with the number 121 was built in 1949 at the H. Cegielski company, Poznan, and was in use as an express locomotive at the Polish State Railways (PKP). She drove up to 110 km/h
how to find → Drive, coming from the German border, through the town Kostrzyn (Küstrin) in direction Dębno (Neudamm/Nm.). After leaving the town center you will go through a train tunnel. Directly after that you will see the locomotive on your upper left. You can park your car on the right side after passing through the tunnel.

Rock festival Woodstock in Kostrzyn (Küstrin)

The biggest in Poland and probably the biggest in Europe rock festival - "Woodstock" - takes place every year in the beginning of August in Kostrzyn.
how to find → Woodstock takes place north-east from Kostrzyn (Küstrin). When driving from Dębno (Neudamm/Nm.) you need to take the road, left on the first roundabout in Kostrzyn (Küstrin).

Fort Sarbinowski in Kostrzyn (Küstrin)

It is a system of bunkers built in 1883-1887 as a part of Kostrzyn Fortress. Now only ruins remains.
how to find → When you drive from Dębno (Neudamm/Nm.) to Kostrzyn (Küstrin) it is located about 3 kilometers before Kostrzyn. It is in the woods on the left side of the road, about 300 meters from road.

Monument of the 1758 Zorndorf battle in Sarbinowo near Kostrzyn (Küstrin)

Reneved monument raised in 2010 on a place of the Zorndorf battle between prussian and russian forces in 1758. The monument was raised in a place of famous and destroyed old monument that was mentioned in the book 'Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg' by the famous german author Theodor Fontane. Many years old monument was only a pile of stones, where in 1758 the general hill of the prussian king Friedrich II was.
how to find → Leave Kostrzyn (Küstrin) in direction Dębno (Neudamm/Nm.), in the village Sarbinowo drive to the left. About a kilometer after the village look on the right side of the street for a mark, which shows an prussian soldier. The monument is on the right side about 100 meters from the street.

Cemetery of Stalag III C in Kostrzyn (Küstrin)

A cemetery in memory of the Allied Prisoners of War, hundreds of whom were killed by the Nazis. Bodies of French, British, Dutch, and other soldiers were buried in common graves.
how to find → From Kostrzyn (Küstrin) you need to drive in the direction of Namyślin (Neumühl/Nm.). In Szumilowo take road left. Than drive the Namyślińska Street straight to the end (stone road). Then, take the road left and drive for about 300 meters. Watch for directions.

Bird Preservation of Słońsk

(Pol.: Rezerwat Ptaków Słońsk) A preserve for protection of various species of birds. Covers the marshes of the Warta River in the south of Kostrzyn (Küstrin). It was created in 1977 A.D.
how to find → When you drive from Kostrzyn in the direction OF Poznań it is just one kilometer from Kostrzyn (Küstrin).

Nationalpark "Ujscie Warty (Warta mouth)"

The National Park "Warta mouth" exists since 2001 here on an area of 8074 ha between Słońsk (Sonnenburg), Kostrzyn (Küstrin) and Witnica (Vietz). Here lives up to 270 bird species, especially endangered and many rare plants. At various applied routes the park can be visited.
how to find → From Kostrzyn (Küstrin) you drive into direction Słońsk (Sonnenburg), the National Park Administration building is not far away from the Kostrzyn (Küstrin) border on the right side of the street, the park is left of the street. Too from Słońsk (Sonnenburg) there are very good walking ways threw the park.

Delicious Gyros, with a lot of vegetables and sauces. A large variety of fast food type meals, but prepared like in a restaurant.
how to find → Located in center of Kostrzyn (Küstrin), near the roundabout, by the road in the direction of Namyślin (Neumühl/Nm.) (oposite the Netto store).

Restaurant is temporarely closed.
Large restaurant with a big offer of food and drinks with the usual Polish bar system (Order/Payment at the counter, the food will be brought to the table). German-speaking staff, fast service. Claimed to be open 24 hours.
how to find → If you are driving from Germany to Kostrzyn (Küstrin), go straight ahead until the roundabout. Then drive to the site of the Shell gas station, from where you go down in a Western fort-like building behind the gas station. The restaurant is located inside the "fort"
