KOSTRZYN (former: Küstrin)
Location
Kostrzyn (Küstrin) is located by the Warta River and odra River, near the border between Poland and Germany. Kostrzyn (Küstrin) is about 45 km far west from Gorzów Wielkopolski (Landsberg/Warthe) , and 90 km east from Berlin (Germany). In Kostrzyn (Küstrin) there is a bridge - border passage to Germany. Nearest town on the German river side is Seelow.
Town has about 17000 inhabitants.
River - Warta is surrounding Kostrzyn (Küstrin) from south, and few kilometers near Kostrzyn (Küstrin) Warta is connecting to Odra River. On the north you can find woods, and on the south large meadows and marshes that are the National Park.
History
In middle of XVI century Kostrzyn (Küstrin) was engrid by big
fortification. There was located town and the castle.
Kostrzyn (Küstrin) was
the capital of Neumark. It was the fortress, but in
1806 was captured by French army. In XIX century around the town was
buildt four forts and few other military objects.
The town and the Castle was completely destroyed during 1945 A.D. by
Russian artillery. After World War II rest of the town including the
castle was distroyed.

Historical railway engine Pt47-121 (33D48) in Kostrzyn (Küstrin)
At the entrance to the railway repair works stands as a seldom exhibit, a historical locomotive of the Polish type Pt47
with tender 33D48.
The vehicle with the number 121 was built in 1949 at the H. Cegielski company, Poznan, and was in use as an express locomotive
at the Polish State Railways (PKP). She drove up to 110 km/h

Monument of the 1758 Zorndorf battle in Sarbinowo near Kostrzyn (Küstrin)
Reneved monument raised in 2010 on a place of the Zorndorf battle between prussian and russian forces in 1758. The monument was raised in a place of famous and destroyed old monument that was mentioned in the book 'Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg' by the famous german author Theodor Fontane. Many years old monument was only a pile of stones, where in 1758 the general hill
of the prussian king Friedrich II was.

A cemetery in memory of the Allied Prisoners of War, hundreds of whom were killed by the Nazis. Bodies of French, British, Dutch, and other soldiers were buried in common graves.

From Kostrzyn (Küstrin) you need to drive in the direction of Namyślin (Neumühl/Nm.). In Szumilowo take road left. Than drive the Namyślińska Street straight to the end (stone road). Then, take the road left and drive for about 300 meters. Watch for directions. |
