WITNICA (former: Vietz)
Location
Witnica (Vietz) is a small city near the river Warta 25 kilometers west of Gorzów Wielkopolski (Landsberg/Warthe) and 20 km east of Kostrzyn (Küstrin).
Witnica (Vietz) is a city with near 6800 inhabitants.
South of Witnica (Vietz) is the valley of the Warta river, an untouched area with water and meadows.
In the north are forests. Part of the borough are three lakes, the biggest of them Jezioro Wielkie (Great Lake) has an expanse of
50 hectares and a deep of 30 meters.
History
The village Vietz (today Witnica) was found probably by the knights of the temple and was since 1261 part of the
Mark Brandenburg. Till the secularisation Vietz was the property of monastries, later it was a own of the electory.
In the 15th century the monks got the right to brew (till today there is a brewery in the city).
1648 the settlement was terminated after the destroyment in the Thirty-Years War. They was found new, when the Royal Post-line
Berlin-Koenigsberg opened a station here.
In 1806 Napoleon and its troops was marching threw the city.
Till the end of the 18th century the most peoples worked in agriculture, later there started a industrialisation, weaving mills,
iron foundries and engineering works was found here.
With the building of the so-called Ostbahn (Eastern train) in 1857 Vietz was connected with the train net.
Since 1935 Vietz is a town.
After the World War II the town got the polish name Witnica, basing on the polish words wic or witka, a kind of willow tree, which you
can find very often in the Warta valley.
After 1945 Witnica (Vietz) was part of different municipals, since 1998 it is part of the municipal Lubuskie.
Today
Witnica (Vietz) is a blowing small city, which have understood, to got a lot of investitions from Poland and
other countries, what you can see in the fast-growing business areas of the town.
Especially the town is featured by their openmindness to the history.

If you come from Kostrzyn (Küstrin), than go short before reaching the towncenter of Witnica (Vietz) to Ul. Gen. Sikorskiego left.

Very nice situated camping site not far away from the Jezioro Dlugi (Dolgensee). You can rent bungalows or space for tents.
