CHOJNA (former: Königsberg/Nm.)
Location
Chojna (Königsberg/Nm.) is located on a way from Szczecin (Stettin) to Kostrzyn (Küstrin) , about 70 km south from Szczecin (Stettin) , and about 60 km north from Kostrzyn (Küstrin) . From Germany the best way is from Schwedt Oder (20 km) via the border Schwedt/ Krajnik Dolny (Niederkränig) .
Chojna (Königsberg/Nm.) is medium town, about 7000 inhabitants.
Chojna (Königsberg/Nm.) is located in big valley. It is partly surrounded by wavy fields and woods.
History
Chojna (Königsberg/Nm.) was buildt in middle of XIII century by the Branderburgian
Graf.
In middleages Chojna (Königsberg/Nm.) former called Königsberg was the biggest town of
Neumark (Nowa Marchia).
During dhe World War II the town has been destroyed in about 75%.
Probably more injured than war occused Russian army thet was statnding
in Chojna (Königsberg/Nm.) . Russian military airport was existing in Chojna (Königsberg/Nm.) up to 1990,
when all Russian soldiers were moved back to Russia.
From the old town survived parts of defensive wall, town hall and the
Cathedral. Town hall war renewed in 1970-1980 as a settlement of "culture house", but the "old look" it has only outside. Cathedral is still in renovation.
Today
Today in Chojna (Königsberg/Nm.) are located station of border police, police precinct, fire department, ambulance station, few banks, library and quite big asortiment of shops and restaurants.
Interesting places:
Marien Church in Chojna is in restoration since 1986. The initiator of church restoration was german architect Günth
er Kumkar. The renovation is mostly sponsored by "fundation for polish-german cooperation". The church tower is over 102 metres high. It is 6th that high tower in Poland. Church in Chojna can be visited every day. Near the entrance you can find phone number or you may go to tourist information (not far) and someone from the tourist information may come and open the church. There is also possible visiting of the tower.

Buildt in 14th century gothic church. In the beginning it belong to closter of Augustinians. From 1536 to 1690 it was changed to warehouse. Before World War II the church was not used as church, but as gymnasium and fire brigade depot. After the war, it was not so destroyed as the St. Mary church and became a church again. Holy mass on Sundays at: 7:00, 9:00, 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Other days 6:00 PM.

If you drive thru Chojna (Königsberg/Nm.) direction from to Szczecin (Stettin) than before Town Hall turn right. Drive about 400 m. If you drive from Osinów Dolny than before town hall turn right and after 200 m turn left and next right. Not easy to find. |

Church dedicated to Mark the Evangelist in Chojna (Königsberg/Nm.) / Barnkowo (Bernickow)
Gothic church from 15th century with neogothic tower from 19th century. Former it belong to Augustinians closter Holy Mass every Sundays: 9:00 AM, Wednesdays 5:00 PM. (Parish: NSPJ Chojna )

Ruins of the 15th century gothic chapel. The chapel was buildt in 1490. It is located near military Russian cementary. It survived the World War II, but after war, socialistic authorities ordered to ruin the obiect. In the time this order was appionted in the Chapel was still XV century frescs. While destroing the chappel some authorities decided to cancel the order, but it was already too late and after few years of being exhibited for rain and bad weather the frescos has disappeared.

On the cemetery there is actually no one grave. It is only small field covered with grass with information board.

In 1951 it was adapted for Russian military aircraft base for 582th Regiment of Aircraft Fighters. Here were standing 34 airplanes - Fighters SU-27.
